Physicians’ DEA Registration Requires Training on Substance Use Disorder
The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 enacted a one-time requirement which went into effect on June 27, 2023, for any Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registered practitioner to complete eight hours of training “on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.” Many U.S. states already require physicians to complete CME hours on safer prescribing of opioids. Kansas currently requires one hour of continuing medical education each year in at least one of the following content areas (1) acute or chronic pain management; (2) the appropriate prescribing of opioids; or (3) the use of prescription drug monitoring programs.
This DEA requirement asks physicians to have additional education on the treatment and management of patients with opioid and other substance use disorder.
DEA registration is renewable every three years. If you have not met this specific eight-hour training requirement yet, the deadline to do so is the date of your next scheduled DEA registration submission. Physicians will not have to submit training-related documentation but should be able to reference it in the event of an audit.
