Keynote Session: Bite-Size Resilience
Stressed during uncertain times? If you are feeling spent, it is probably because the level of emotional exhaustion in health care workers was already at an all-time high before COVID-19, with one out of every three people already meeting the criteria for burnout. In this enlightening and entertaining program, J. Bryan Sexton, PhD, provides perspective, hope and simple strategies to try during tense times.

J. Bryan Sexton, PhDSexton has captured the wisdom of front-line health care workers through rigorous assessments of safety culture, teamwork, and workforce resilience. His research instruments have been used around the world. His current R01 grant from NIH is a randomized clinical trial of resilience training. Sexton has studied teamwork, safety,
and resilience in high-risk environments, such as commercial aviation cockpits, operating rooms, and intensive care units. With specializations in organizational assessment, teamwork, survey development, and quantitative methods, he spends his time teaching, mentoring, conducting research, and finding practical ways of getting busy physicians to do the right thing—by making it the easy thing to do.

Professionals’ Health Program
The KMS Professionals’ Health Program protects the health of Kansans and promotes medical excellence by seeking early identification, rehabilitation, and treatment of physicians affected by mental/emotional disorders, physical health, substance use disorders, disruptive behaviors, and other life circumstances that affect medical competency. During this forum, an update on PHP services will be provided and how they can help physicians with burnout and medical professional overall well-being.
