Communication regarding drug shortages

| Print |

ISSUE SUMMARY

In early April 2011, the Food and Drug Administration added the generic names for Ritalin and Adderall to a list of drugs that are part of a nationwide shortage.  The exact reason for the shortage has not been identified however, it is possible that supply limitations, manufacturing delays and increased demand could be contributing factors. While this circumstance mostly affected patients who use Ritalin and Adderall to treat Attention Deficit Disorder, it brings to the forefront the challenges faced by patients, families, pharmacists and physicians when a given drug or vaccine is in short supply.

ADOPTED ACTION OR POLICY

The Kansas Medical Society will work with the American Medical Association to educate Kansas physicians about issues related to drug shortages.

Adopted by the KMS House of Delegates on April 30, 2011.
