Kansas coroner system
ISSUE SUMMARY
In recent years concerns have been expressed that the coroner system in Kansas is outdated and not in step with current death investigation systems nationally. Because of concerns over the fiscal situation of the State over the last several years, and the significant cost implications of implementing a statewide medical examiner system, KMS has not pursued discussions about re-structuring the coroner system. While the State’s financial condition continues to be very problematic, it is felt that KMS should at least proceed with developing an analysis of the current system and recommendations for possible changes. It is understood that the financial condition of the State could present a very real obstacle to the adoption of any changes that have a significant fiscal note attached.
ADOPTED ACTION OR POLICY
The Kansas Medical Society Executive Committee be directed to appoint a task force to study, in collaboration with other appropriate agencies and organizations, the current Kansas coroner system, including its strengths, weaknesses and whether a statewide medical examiner/death investigator system is a more appropriate model for Kansas.
Adopted by the KMS House of Delegates on April 30, 2011.
