Access to health care

ISSUE SUMMARY

Even though the recently enacted federal health reform legislation will provide health insurance coverage for an estimated 32 million additional Americans, there will undoubtedly remain demand for programs to serve the remaining uninsured and indigent.  Physicians have a strong tradition of volunteering their needed medical services in community-based programs which serve these populations, such as the programs in Wichita, Topeka, Kansas City, Lawrence other cities, through the cooperative efforts of physicians, hospitals, pharmacists, indigent clinics, other caregivers, city and county governments and community agencies.

ADOPTED ACTION OR POLICY

The Kansas Medical Society applauds the efforts of physicians and their local organizations to improve access to care, and encourages the further development of community-based programs to provide needed medical care to the uninsured and vulnerable populations.  KMS will continue to serve as a clearinghouse and resource to physicians and communities who are seeking to develop such programs to benefit the uninsured, the indigent and vulnerable populations.

Adopted by the KMS House of Delegates on May 1, 2010.
