Individual ownership of health insurance
ISSUE SUMMARY
The ability of an individual to select, control and own their health insurance policy is key to people being able to preserve their freedom of choice and privacy in medical care and to maintain the privacy of the patient-doctor relationship. Creating a market for individually owned health insurance will require changes in federal tax policy, the elimination of mandates and state regulations which impact the cost of health insurance, the involvement of employers to provide defined contributions to support health insurance premiums which allow employees to select their own health insurance, and changes to the new health reform legislation to make individually owned health insurance a more attractive option.
ADOPTED ACTION OR POLICY
The Kansas Medical Society reaffirms its support for the principle of individual ownership, responsibility and control of one’s health insurance coverage, and will support changes in public policy which will encourage and enable a viable market environment for individual ownership of health insurance policies to thrive.
Adopted by KMS House of Delegates on May 1, 2010.
