Tips for effective communication

| Print |

  • Be respectful: Address policy makers by their appropriate title such as “Representative” or “Senator”
  • Be selective: Clearly identify the one issue you’d like to discuss then share how the issue affects you, your practice and your patients.
  • Be brief: Take no longer than one minute to state what you want and why you want it. If you challenge yourself to deliver the message in under a minute, you will boil it down to its essence
  • Be accurate: Never go beyond what you know to be true. If you cannot answer a question say, “I don’t know but I will find out.”
